Launched in June 1971, Angel Delight marks a significant chapter in the history of Fairport Convention, being the first album created as a quartet after the departure of Richard Thompson. The band, residing in a converted pub called The Angel in Hertfordshire, expertly blended traditional sounds with original music, capturing the spirit of their time.
The title track is a playful nod to their pub life and the beloved British dessert. It whimsically portrays their experiences, including a nod to producer John Wood as ‘John The Wood’ and drummer Dave Mattacks as ‘Dave The Drum.’ The album also recounts the moment a lorry crashed into the pub, a near-miss for band member Dave Swarbrick.
