Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, formed in Glasgow in 1982, brought a unique twist to the music scene with their melodic, guitar-driven pop. Led by the Buxton-born singer-songwriter Lloyd Cole, who was studying Philosophy and English at the University of Glasgow, their sound stood out against the glossy synths characteristic of the 1980s music era. With droll lyrics steeped in literary references, their album ‘Mainstream’, released in October 1987, showcases this distinctive style.

After taking a break to search for the right producer, they collaborated with Ian Stanley, known for his work on Tears for Fears’ iconic ‘Songs from the Big Chair’. This partnership resulted in an album that, despite its lavish production, feels refreshingly authentic and unspoiled by the decade’s excesses. The singles ‘My Bag’, ‘Jennifer She Said’, and ‘From the Hip’ received acclaim and solidified their place in the indie pop genre.
