‘Why Do Birds Sing?’ marks the fifth studio album from the legendary American cult band, Violent Femmes. This special edition features the fan-favorite track “American Music,” which soared to No. 2 on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart, alongside a captivating cover of Culture Club’s “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me.”

As one of the best 80s alternative rock albums, Violent Femmes captured the essence of youthful angst with their raw, jittery sound. Although they didn’t achieve massive commercial success, their music became the soundtrack for countless troubled adolescents worldwide. Their self-titled debut in 1983 laid the groundwork for numerous alternative rock artists that followed, blending sharp-edged folk-rock with darkly humorous lyrics.

Formed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the early ’80s, the trio comprised singer/guitarist Gordon Gano, bassist Brian Ritchie, and drummer Victor DeLorenzo. Discovered by Pretenders’ James Honeyman-Scott while busking, they signed to Slash Records and released a melodic folk-punk collection that resonated with young listeners, thanks to tracks like “Blister in the Sun,” “Kiss Off,” and “Add It Up.” Over the years, their influence has extended across various genres, from the anti-folk movement to the indie-pop sounds of bands like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

More than 40 years later, Violent Femmes’ legacy remains robust. As Popmatters noted, their blend of humor and rebellious spirit may make them one of the most significant rock bands of the 1980s. Pitchfork elaborated, stating their music resonates with young people today, creating a shared cultural language.
